Practical Natural Building Work Experience

with Lola Byron

Begin the year building something real. Join us for five days of practical natural building as we continue work on the farm manager’s house at A Quinta.

We’ll work with lime and earth plasters, assemble the layers of a living roof over an existing reciprocal structure, prepare the floor and fit doors. These are the stages where a building begins to feel like a home—and where careful preparation and attention to detail make a difference.

Alongside the build, enjoy nourishing vegetarian food, shared meals and time in our off-grid farm community.

What will we work on?

❖ Lime & earth plastering

Get hands-on experience preparing and applying plasters, working with the surfaces of the building and developing a feel for the materials.

❖ The layers of a living roof

Help assemble the layers above an existing reciprocal roof structure, seeing how they fit together as part of the living-roof system.

❖ Preparing the floor

Take part in preparing the floor for its next stage, with guidance through the tasks needed on site.

❖ Fitting doors

Help position and fit doors, practising the care and precision involved in making them work within a natural building.

This is a working project, so the order and balance of activities may change with the weather, material readiness and progress on site.
We welcome everyone — whether you have some previous experience in natural building or are completely new. Under Lola’s guidance, all participants will be supported in learning and practicing hands-on techniques, though prior experience can be helpful.

What is Natural Building?

Natural building is so much more than just building with natural materials; it is about reconnecting with our ancestral roots and understanding our natural environment. It’s about building beautiful, durable, healthy, functional and spiritually uplifting buildings as well as building relationships with people and the planet along the way. It’s about observing, consciously designing and respecting the world around us, using local, renewable and sustainable materials to create buildings that work in harmony with the inhabitants needs and the environment it will live in.

Building a structure with natural materials is an empowering, humbling and inspiring experience. We will connect with the earth, with ourselves, with each other and with these ancient building techniques which are silently ingrained in all of us; together we tap into this forgotten knowledge and bring to life the knowledge and skills to build your own home.
